The bright lights of Madison Square Garden were ready for a celebration, but Victor Wembanyama had other plans.
Facing the possibility of a near-insurmountable 3-0 series deficit, the San Antonio Spurs delivered their most complete performance of the NBA Finals 2026, defeating the New York Knicks 115-111 in Game 3 and cutting New York’s series lead to 2-1.
At the center of the victory was Wembanyama, who reminded the basketball world why he is considered one of the game’s most transformative talents. The 22-year-old superstar finished with 32 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and three blocks, dominating both ends of the floor while helping San Antonio revive its championship hopes.
A Statement Performance on the Biggest Stage
The pressure surrounding Wembanyama entering Game 3 was immense. Just days earlier, the Spurs star endured a heartbreaking finish in Game 2, committing a costly turnover and missing a potential game-winning shot as the Knicks escaped with a 105-104 victory to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
Rather than allowing those mistakes to define the series, Wembanyama responded with one of the most impressive performances of his young career.
From the opening quarter, the French phenom played with urgency, attacking mismatches, protecting the rim, and controlling the pace whenever the Spurs needed stability. His ability to score from all three levels forced the Knicks to constantly adjust their defensive schemes, while his presence in the paint limited New York’s opportunities around the basket.
Spurs Finally Find Their Rhythm
San Antonio’s supporting cast also stepped up when it mattered most.
Stephon Castle provided a major offensive spark, while De’Aaron Fox delivered key plays in crunch time. The Spurs were more disciplined with the basketball, capitalized on Knicks turnovers, and executed efficiently in half-court situations throughout the night.
Perhaps most importantly, San Antonio maintained its composure during a frantic fourth quarter. Every time the Knicks threatened to seize momentum, the Spurs answered with timely baskets and defensive stops.
Knicks Still Hold the Advantage
Despite the loss, the Knicks remain in control of the series.

Jalen Brunson continued his outstanding postseason run with 32 points, while OG Anunoby added 28 points in a strong offensive effort. However, New York struggled to generate consistent offense late in the game and could not overcome San Antonio’s improved execution.
The Knicks still lead the NBA Finals 2026, 2-1 and remain just two victories away from capturing their first NBA championship since 1973. Yet Game 3 served as a reminder that the Spurs are far from finished.
Momentum Shift Ahead of Game 4?
History remains against San Antonio, but Game 3 may have altered the tone of the series.
After losing the first two games on their home floor, many observers believed the Spurs were headed toward a short Finals appearance. Instead, Wembanyama delivered a superstar response in one of basketball’s most iconic arenas, keeping San Antonio’s title hopes alive and injecting fresh drama into the championship matchup.
With Game 4 set to remain in New York, the spotlight once again falls on Wembanyama and the Spurs. If Game 3 was any indication, this Finals battle is far from over.
